Thekla’s Top 10 Tracks of September

1.       Pumarosa: Honey

Back with a new pyschopop hit, this time more vibrant and whimsical than the last two, Pumarosa’s third single marks their first release with new record label, Fiction Records – and one that’s another instantaneous hit.
Better still, you can catch them at the Louisiana on the 27th October.
Tickets available here.

2.       D. D. Dumbo: Walrus

His LP, ‘Utopia Defeated’ is set for worldwide release on October 7th, and this particular number is as god as it gets. If you know of The Police (and I know full well that you do), then you’ll draw a few similarities with this particular track…

3.       Christine & the Queens: Tilted

Not technically a new release, but since her album’s English version came out in February and her performance at Glastonbury back in June, Héloïse Letissier has gone from strength to strength – and she’ll be in the UK come November playing a smattering of entirely sold out shows. If you got tickets, we applaud you; if not, at least you can still listen to her track here.

4.       Angel Olsen:  Shut Up Kiss Me

Released as part of her September album, this track has all the tongue in cheek smirking and anguished undertones you’d expect from a late 90s Hole video marred with the shoegaze stylings of Lush.

5.       WHITE: Recreational TV

Never heard of these guys? They’re pretty new and sudden on the music scene, but with a track like this, it’s no surprise they’ve quickly made it to our top 10 of must-hear new music this September.
Talking Heads meets the prolific vocals of Bowie (some have suggested). It also features the backing vocals of Gary Watson; The Lapelles frontman who sadly passed away on his 22nd birthday this year. Not to mention (except that we will…) the vocals of a number of other Glaswegian bands: Lucia Fontaine, Baby Strange, The Ninth Wave and The Cut.

6.       Ezra Furman: Teddy I’m Ready

It’s simply one of those songs that you can immediately recognise as a lyrical and instrumental success. If you know Mr. Furman, then you’ll know he’s already built up a fairly immense cult following over in the states, and after touring pretty intensely across the UK this summer, we’re fairly sure he’s just as iconic over here now.
Affecting lyrics, piercing saxophone and an atmosphere of pure rock ‘n’ roll. If you’re not hooked after one listen, we’ll eat our dusty old captain’s hat.
(Disclaimer: we don’t have a hat).

7.       Massive Attack: The Spoils

No, it may not have been released in September, but they played their homecoming gig at the Downs on September 3rd, and we’re still not over it. What’s more, this particular video was released in August, features the genius collaboration of Bristol musicians and I don’t think we need to justify this choice any further. It gets bigger and better every time you listen to it.

8.       Glass Animals: Life Itself

Written from their experiences on the road, this is one of the many zany tracks off their new album, ‘How to Be a Human Being’. Once again it’s all about the narrative rhythm that is intrinsic of these Oxford Lads, and the layered jungle of instruments that make up this song’s backbone.

9.       The Lemon Twigs: These Words

They’re the Beatles reimagined – if there were just two of them, and they sounded a little more like the Beach Boys.
Is it pop? Is it rock? It’s hard to tell. But, who cares, there’s a great piano instrumental, and if you’re still not quite over the romantic notion that the 70’s is coming back round then you’ll definitely be wanting to give these guys a listen.

10.      Cocoa Futures: The Blue

4 seconds in and you’re already hooked, right? With an intro riff this infectious, they’ve set themselves a pretty high precedent to follow on with their EP release later this month.
Keep an eye out for their EP, ‘The Blue’, set for release on 2nd December via Lost In The Manor Records.
