This Is Lorelei is the solo recording project of Nate Amos, an American singer, songwriter, and record producer born on January 8, 1991. Amos is also known as the lead guitarist and producer of the indie pop band Water from Your Eyes.
Amos grew up in a musical household in Virginia and then Vermont, spending many of his formative years in a studio environment. His highly acute ear and fascination for musical composition were imbued at an early age. His father is a bluegrass musician, and that tradition is deeply ingrained in his musical sensibility.
Amos began using the name This Is Lorelei around 2013, after relocating to Chicago. There, he forged important relationships and left an indelible mark on the city’s burgeoning DIY community, engineering and mastering numerous albums, collaborating on multiple projects, and curating the online DIY label Grandpa Bay.
This Is Lorelei serves as a home base for Amos’ hyperactive musical mind — a space where he experiments and explores sound with a nearly academic rigor. He writes, performs, engineers, mixes, and masters every aspect of each release.
His 2024 album Box for Buddy, Box for Star marked his first release under the This Is Lorelei moniker prepared as a traditional album release, distributed through Double Double Whammy and reflecting a renewed focus on music-making after getting sober. Critics at Pitchfork praised its variety of musical influences — from bluegrass to pop — alongside its plaintive, emotionally direct songwriting.
What began as a straightforward writing project has evolved into a highly intimate deconstruction of pop music — a self-study in which Amos enters as a songwriter and emerges as a composer.
