thekla presents THEKLA30 ft. The Other Tribe: 14+ event

THEKLA 30 ⚓ Celebrating 30 years in Bristol Harbour

Since releasing their debut chart single, Skirts, it has become something of a summer anthem. It’s bought a little sunshine to places as far apart as Glastonbury, Bestival, and the Secret Garden Party; to Ibiza, Mallorca, and the Alps.

After it’s release, the band played shows up and down the country, bringing the party wherever they could. They released three more tracks, honing their sound and feeding the online babble surrounding the band: Sing With Your Feet, We Should Be Dancing, and Your Kisses.  All became online and live favourites. My Girl, their second single release, continued the build. Another track, titled Nobody Else, from their recent recording sessions, was posted in December 2013; an enticing hint of the album to come. Ollie and Miles, the two DJs in the band also posted a series of mixes online, showing off the band’s influences and leading to a run of DJ bookings.

The five friends from Bristol – James, Miles, Ollie, Alex and Max – have come some way since forming at University three years ago. Those years are being distilled in to what will be an incendiary debut, soaking up their musical influences and with plenty of the excitement of their live shows thrown in.

THE RAMONA FLOWERS

Bristol-based The Ramona Flowers, whose previous singles include the emotional Lust and Lies, have been praised for their rawness but simultaneously their courage to experiment with a surprising number of styles. Music sympatico Andy Barlow of Manchester electronica duo Lamb immediately heard the potential in the band’s early demos and has since taken on production duties.

The Ramona Flowers wowed audiences on the recent Bastille tour; Hot Chip and Ladytron have remixed them, and NME describe the band’s textural sound as “a wholly different beast, and one that could have feasibly fitted on Radiohead’s Kid A.”

SEASFIRE
www.facebook.com/seasfire

Seasfire draw on their hometown of Bristol’s rich heritage of trip-hop and boundary-crossing music to produce melancholy songs full of love and loss.

Combining James Blake-esque beats with the intensity of Burial and the heart-wrenching lyrical sensibilities of Jeff Buckley; Josh, James, Joe and David write songs ‘…about the dead end relationships they’ve been in and the general feeling of hopelessness in unemployment – with too much time on their hands and dreaming of escape.’

This is 3am music that deserves around-the-clock attention.

& SPECIAL GUESTS

IDLES
www.facebook.com/idlesband

Hailing from the dark, dank recesses of Bristol’s underbelly, the sharply-dressed and incendiary post-punks combine brooding Interpol-esque indie-rock and lumberjack beards with the furore of classic punk.

The live shows are bitter, sweaty and with an atmosphere thicker than blood – but there’s a pop-tinged layer to their noise which claws the dapper lads from the seedy depths of emodom and into a Bauhaus era of acute, striking post-punk. Coming up from barhopping stroppers to fully-fledged beacons of angst, Idles are one to keep your eye on.
