With 10 years of touring and two acclaimed records under their belts, The Subways return with their third studio album ‘Money And Celebrity’. Recorded and mixed by Stephen Street (Blur/Smiths/Kaiser Chiefs), this explosive UK pop/rock record melds their debut’s melodic, punk immediacy with the dynamic power of 2008’s ‘All Or Nothing’. The foundations of the album came from Billy – “I was sitting in front of the TV with my acoustic guitar and picking up on things that both excited and annoyed me: the circus of the celebrity rise and breakdown, love and loneliness, partying hard, big money and the impact the financial crisis is having on us all”. This inspired the lyrical content with tracks like ‘We Don’t Need Money To Have A Good Time’ written as a tonic to this crisis and ‘Popdeath’; a comment on the fast turn-over of TV show generated celebrity. The album was recorded and mixed by Stephen Street at Sofa Sound, London and the 4 singles have been given a ‘rock radio re-mix’ by Adrian Bushby (Foo Fighters/Muse).

‘Money and Celebrity’ was well received amongst critics – Rock Sound called it a collection of “brilliantly anarchic punk-pop vignettes; each being a big musical finger that sticks it to financial greed, the mediocre mainstream and the fame fetishists” whilst Kerrang! described it as “an album packed not only with exuberant and quirkily innovative songs but a sense of energy and defiance’. Lead single ‘We Don’t Need Money To Have A Good Time’ became the band’s first song to be play-listed on Radio 1 and was soon followed by ‘It’s A Party’. To coincide with the release of the new album, they played in 25 countries and 100 + cities as part of their European tour late last year. Having cemented their reputation as a formidable live act, in summer 2011 they headlined their first European festival in Cologne, pulling 60,000 people in front of the stage. According to Billy, Charlotte and Josh, “There is nothing more exciting for us than being on tour. We never want to do anything else. To get up onstage and to play rock and roll every day, to visit new towns, new cities, new countries, new continents and to make new friends along the way, it’s the most amazing experience we’ve ever felt”.

Over the years, the band has built up an incredibly loyal fan base (with over 200,000 likes on Facebook, 14,000 Twitter followers and their YouTube channel clocking up an impressive 8 million + views). So with their legion of fans behind them, the band reworked the traditional format of funding and releasing records and decided to raise money themselves through direct to fan music platform PLEDGEMUSIC. The response far exceeded the band’s hopes, with the project hitting 185% after just 3 months. The Subways are back on the road again in February as they embark on their 2012 European tour, which concludes in the UK in May. After the release of their third single Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, the band are set to have a busy summer with appearances at major festivals all over the UK and Europe.
