Chicago indie rock types the Orwells were in their last year of high school in 2011 when they signed to L.A.-based blogger Justin Gage’s Autumn Tone record label after they initially sent him a link to their video with hopes it would lead to being featured on his website. They formed in 2009 when cousins Mario Cuomo (vocals) and Dominic Corso (guitar) teamed up with brothers Grant (bass) and Henry Brinner (drums), alongside their friend Matt O’Keefe (guitar), and started making music. The combination of their raw youth and rasping melodies on single “Mallrats (La La La)” was picked up by the likes of Pitchfork and was swiftly followed by the release of their debut album, Remember When, in 2012. They graduated high school early in 2013 and immediately set out on the road and toured nonstop for the majority of the year, stopping briefly to record the Other Voices EP with TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek in the summer. Their frenetic live performances brought interest from a host of major labels, but they eventually signed to Atlantic Records and headed to the studio with indie producer Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian) to work on new material. The following year they set out with Arctic Monkeys on a North American tour and appeared on the American talk show Late Show with David Letterman. Their sophomore effort, Disgraceland, arrived later that year. Opting for a more grown-up approach, both lyrically and musically, the band will deliver its third album, Terrible Human Beings, at the beginning of 2017.

THE ORWELLS

For The Orwells, Remember When will be an introduction of sorts—the 12-track rat-race shows the band’s repertoire of pranging riffs and sneering, snot-nosed vocals. The tracks are a walloping war-cry from a generation that up until this point has only offered bubblegum pop—the animus of The Orwells. It’s quite clear early on the in listening to the LP that the band is well aware of the past, the homage rings through the record, using the ghost of punk’s past as their musical sprit guide. However, the band straddles the thing line between their influences and their originality, ripping riffs and smashing drums in a fashion that their age into being just another fact mentioned in their bio.
The Orwells are made up of five dudes from Chicago, Illinois. They play rock n roll music. Their names are Mario, Grant, Henry, Dominick and Matt. They write songs — scratch that, primitive teenage battle cries — about girls and America and being suspended from high school. Although one might categorize The Orwells’ distinct brand of the blues as garage or punk, they would be wrong. The Orwells sound comes from a deeper, different place–a place both long forgotten and also timeless.
